MARTIAL ARTS INTER SERVICES CHAMPIONSHIP 2022 On 16th-17th July 2022, the Royal Navy Royal Marines Mixed Martial Arts Association hosted the Martial Arts Inter Services Championship 2022 at HMS Nelson, Portsmouth. It is the first Martial Arts Inter Services Championship since 2019, as COVID-19 discontinued 2020 and 2021 championships. Service members from a variety of martial arts disciplines, including Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), World Taekwondo Federation (WT), International Taekwondo Federation (ITF), and Kendo, competed in the Martial Arts Inter Services Championship 2022. The Army Karate team was unable to compete, so a different championship will be held for the Karate team later this year. International Taekwondo Federation and Kendo competition was held on Saturday, 16th July 2022; World Taekwondo Federation and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition was held on 17th July 2022. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a combat sport and martial art that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. This year 53 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu participants competed. Royal Air Force and British Army had good turnout, while the Royal Navy had five competitors. Royal Navy BJJ team won six gold medals in their various categories. For the Royal Navy, AB Emily Astbury, who is currently on physical trainer course, earned three gold medals, along with ET (ME) Rhys Gray from HMS Defender who won two golds and ET (ME) Harrison from HMS Queen Elizabeth who won one gold.
