Sgt Yamikani Guba has won Gold at the Ultimate Open Taekwondo Championships

It was great to see Sgt Yamikani Guba (5th Dan Black Belt in World Taekwondo) from 3rd Regiment Royal Horse Artillery compete and win the Gold medal at the Ultimate Open Taekwondo Championships (open to all World Taekwondo grades and ages) on 17th October 2021 at the Metrodome Leisure centre in Barnsley.

Sgt Guba represented the British Army Taekwondo Team in the heavy weight category A+80kgs (Advanced Dan grades) in his first fight in over 18 months due to Covid restrictions.

In the final Sgt Guba fought against Winston John from Chung-Yong Taekwondo Academy (CYTA), South London. Sgt Guba made an impressive and dynamic start taking a lead of 11-2 into the second round. He then upped the ante and as the second round reached the last minute he administered a couple of explosive head shots to end the fight and win by knock out. After the Matisse medics did the mandatory medical safety assessment, Sgt Guba was the first to check on his opponent showing sportsmanship and empathy to his defeated opponent.

This was the first of a series of regional and national Taekwondo competitions which are being used as build up events in preparation for and preparedness for the North East Open Championships on 24th October and the British National Taekwondo Championships on the 7th November which will be held in London at the Olympic Park.

Sgt Guba has been selected to represent Army Taekwondo in the World Masters Games in Japan next year and most definitely has podium potential.
