About Us

The British Army provides a unique opportunity to play and to be paid for playing sport. People are at the heart of all that we do; we identify, nurture and develop sporting talent so that Army sportsmen and sportswomen have a chance to compete at the highest level.

Formed in 1995, the Army Martial Arts Association supports Regular and Reserve martial arts practitioners within the Army across the recognised martial art disciplines. It provides opportunities to compete at both Army and UK Armed Forces level and encourages our elite athletes to gain success at National and International levels. We also actively encourage participation at grass roots level and provide opportunities for all personnel to take part.

Martial arts training enhances both physical and moral components.  It is a great cardiovascular workout, improving stamina, general health and overall fitness. It improves physical strength as a direct result of learning to control and dictate the movement of an opponent. It enhances power and flexibility, balance and posture, physical co-ordination and mental reaction time.

Martial artists are expected to adhere to a strict code of ethics – this produces outstanding examples of good character and honest conduct. Guided by the principle of ‘mutual benefit and prosperity’, martial arts practitioners are instilled with respect, modesty and politeness.

The Army Martial Arts Association offers an ideal range of martial arts disciplines for all ages, all abilities and is gender-free.  Confidence and self-esteem are enhanced as players progress through the ranks, and the very nature of the grading system ensures that the next goal is always realistic and achievable with effort. A useful spin off from martial arts is that by their nature they offer better self-defence training at close quarters than any other recognised sport.
